$ 30 million donation to support flagship Atrium Rehabilitation Center facility – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE – A $ 30 million donation will support the new Atrium Health Carolinas rehabilitation center and also honor the family of an Atrium patient.

A new facility will be named the David L. Conlan Center in honor of a longtime friend, colleague and trusted advisor to developer and philanthropist Charlotte Howard C. “Smoky” Bissell, as well as a partner in the Bissell family. until his death in August 2021..

The facility will be the anchor for Carolina’s Rehabilitation, a flagship facility slated to open in November 2022. It will replace the current building built in the 1970s.

Bissell, his wife Margaret and Bissell Ballantyne – the entity he’s partnered with – made the donation to honor Conlan’s life. Conlan was a patient at Atrium Health receiving rehabilitative medicine.

When complete, the 150,000 square foot specialty hospital will have 70 private patient rooms, a 9,300 square foot outpatient clinic, an outdoor therapeutic garden, an aquatic therapy program and an independent living center to help patients relearn the activities of daily living.

The project began in September 2020, marking the first step in the modernization of the Carolinas Medical Center campus in Atrium.

“We are touched by the immense generosity of Margaret and Smoky Bissell, which will allow Atrium Health to further improve our latest technologies and programs to better serve patients and surrounding communities,” said Eugene A. David Conlan’s name will forever be linked to a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital, a place where wounds are healed, medical knowledge advanced and lives rebuilt. “

In addition to naming the David L. Conlan Center, the donation will be used to advance the scope, geography and effectiveness of existing and future rehabilitation services and programs offered by Carolinas Rehabilitation. Currently, Carolinas Rehabilitation includes five inpatient hospitals and 18 outpatient facilities.

“We experienced first-hand the excellent compassionate care David received while in hospital at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center,” said Smoky Bissell. “Margaret and I are proud to honor him by supporting a facility that will truly reflect the world-class team that cares for its patients – a team that understands best practices, innovation and attention to detail. “

Smoky Bissell has had a major influence on the growth of the Atrium system, from leading the campaign to build the Levine Children’s Hospital, to providing significant support to cancer programs, to relief efforts. COVID-19, to research and education.

An additional portion of their donation will support educational opportunities at the new Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist School of Medicine in Charlotte as well as the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute.
